What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?
Do your eyes often feel dry, irritated, gritty, or tired? Do you experience burning, redness, watering, or blurred vision that improves temporarily after blinking? These symptoms may be caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), one of the most common causes of dry eye disease.
Our eyelids contain tiny oil-producing glands called Meibomian glands. These glands release a special oil that forms the outer layer of the tear film. This oily layer prevents tears from evaporating too quickly and keeps the surface of the eyes comfortable and healthy.
When these glands become blocked or produce poor-quality oil, tears evaporate faster than normal. As a result, the eyes become dry and irritated. This condition is known as MGD and is a major contributor to evaporative dry eye disease.
MGD can affect people of all ages, particularly those who spend long hours using computers and smartphones, wear contact lenses, or have eyelid inflammation. Ageing and certain skin conditions may also increase the risk.
What Are the Symptoms of MGD?
Common symptoms include:
Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations in the eyes.
Redness and irritation.
Excessive watering despite feeling dry.
Blurred or fluctuating vision.
Eye fatigue while reading or using digital screens.
Discomfort when wearing contact lenses.
If these symptoms persist, an eye examination can help identify MGD and determine the severity of dry eye disease.
How Is MGD Treated?
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may improve with warm compresses, regular eyelid hygiene, lubricating eye drops, and lifestyle changes.
However, when the Meibomian glands remain blocked despite conventional treatment, additional procedures may be beneficial.
What Is Thermal Pulsation Treatment?
Thermal pulsation is an advanced treatment designed to unblock the Meibomian glands and improve the flow of oil into the tears.
The treatment applies controlled warmth to the inner eyelids while providing gentle, pulsating pressure to the eyelids. This combination helps soften and remove thickened oil that obstructs the glands.
Unlike ordinary warm compresses, thermal pulsation systems are designed to deliver controlled heat and mechanical pressure to the affected eyelids.
The procedure is generally performed in the clinic and usually takes around 12 minutes, depending on the device and protocol used. It is non-surgical and is generally well tolerated. Your eye specialist will determine whether it is suitable for you.
What Are the Benefits of Thermal Pulsation?
Potential benefits include:
Improved flow of oil from blocked Meibomian glands.
Relief from dryness, burning, and irritation.
Improved tear film stability.
Greater comfort during reading and screen use.
Reduced dependence on frequent lubricating drops in some patients.
Some patients experience relief for several months, sometimes 6–12 months or longer. However, results vary, and repeat treatment may be required. Thermal pulsation does not permanently cure MGD or restore glands that have been irreversibly damaged.
Is Thermal Pulsation Right for You?
Not every patient with dry eyes requires thermal pulsation. A detailed examination of the eyelids, Meibomian glands, and tear film helps determine the most appropriate treatment. Some patients may benefit from a combination of thermal pulsation, eyelid care, lubricants, and other medical treatments.
