LASIK Eye Surgery: Say Goodbye to Glasses with Dr. Sharad Lakhotia
Enjoy greater freedom from glasses and contact lenses with modern laser vision correction.
Are you tired of wearing glasses every day? Do contact lenses cause discomfort, or do you wish to enjoy sports, travel, and everyday activities without depending on spectacles? LASIK eye surgery may be an option worth exploring.
I am Dr. Sharad Lakhotia, Chief of Lakhotia Eye Centre & Laser Institute, Greater Kailash-II, New Delhi, and I believe that understanding your treatment options is the first step towards making a confident decision about your eye health.
What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is a modern refractive surgery that uses a specialised laser to reshape the cornea, the transparent front surface of the eye. This helps light focus more accurately on the retina, improving vision.
LASIK can correct common refractive errors, including:
Myopia (short-sightedness): Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.
Hyperopia (long-sightedness): Difficulty seeing nearby objects clearly.
Astigmatism: Blurred or distorted vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea.
For suitable candidates, LASIK can significantly reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
How Is LASIK Performed?
LASIK is generally a quick procedure performed using anaesthetic eye drops. A specialised laser creates a thin flap in the cornea, and an excimer laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue according to your prescription. The flap is then repositioned.
The procedure usually takes only a short time for both eyes, although the overall clinic visit is longer because of preparation and post-operative checks. Most patients experience little discomfort during surgery and notice improvement in vision within the first few days.
Modern laser vision correction technology allows treatment to be tailored to the patient's eyes and prescription.
Who Is Suitable for LASIK?
LASIK is not suitable for everyone. A detailed eye examination is essential before deciding on surgery.
You may be considered a candidate if:
You are generally 18 years or older.
Your spectacle prescription has remained stable.
Your corneas are healthy and sufficiently thick.
You do not have significant untreated dry eye disease or certain corneal disorders.
Your overall eye health is suitable for the procedure.
The assessment may include corneal mapping, corneal thickness measurement, refractive testing, tear-film evaluation, and a comprehensive eye examination. Alternative procedures, such as SMILE or PRK, may be considered depending on your individual needs.
Is LASIK Safe? What Are the Risks?
LASIK has a well-established safety record when performed on appropriately selected patients. However, no surgery is completely risk-free.
Possible side effects include temporary dryness, glare, halos around lights, fluctuating vision, and difficulty with night driving. Some patients may have residual spectacle power or require additional treatment. Rarely, more serious complications can occur.
LASIK does not prevent age-related changes in near vision, commonly called presbyopia, which usually develop after the age of 40. Reading glasses may still be needed later in life.
Recovery After LASIK
Most patients return to routine activities within a day or two, depending on their recovery and their doctor's advice. You should use prescribed eye drops, avoid rubbing your eyes, attend follow-up visits, and follow instructions regarding swimming, eye makeup, and strenuous activities.
