Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery: A Modern Approach to Cataract Treatment

Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery: A Modern Approach to Cataract Treatment

Cataract is one of the most common causes of progressive vision loss, particularly with increasing age. Modern cataract surgery has evolved significantly, and Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) represents an advanced technology designed to make several important steps of cataract surgery more precise and computer-controlled.

At Lakhotia Eye Centre & Laser Institute, Greater Kailash Part-2, New Delhi, femtosecond laser technology is used as part of a comprehensive approach to modern cataract management.

What is Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery?

In conventional cataract surgery, the surgeon uses specialized microsurgical instruments to perform steps such as creating corneal incisions and opening the capsule surrounding the cataractous lens.

In FLACS, a sophisticated femtosecond laser can perform selected steps with computer-guided precision. The laser uses extremely short pulses of light to create precise corneal incisions, a capsulotomy, and fragmentation or softening of the cataractous lens.

The surgeon then completes the procedure, removes the cataract and implants an appropriate intraocular lens (IOL).

What are the potential advantages of FLACS?

One of the important advantages of femtosecond laser technology is precision and reproducibility. The laser can create highly customized incisions and capsulotomies based on measurements of the individual eye.

Laser-assisted lens fragmentation may also reduce the amount of ultrasound energy required during certain cataract procedures. This can be particularly useful in selected patients, although the actual benefit depends on the density of the cataract and individual eye characteristics.

FLACS may also be used in conjunction with premium intraocular lenses, including multifocal, trifocal and extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) lenses, when appropriate. Precise surgical planning is especially important when patients desire reduced dependence on spectacles after surgery.

Is FLACS suitable for everyone?

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is not automatically better or necessary for every cataract patient. The decision depends on factors such as cataract density, corneal health, pupil size, ocular anatomy, previous eye surgery and the patient's visual requirements.

A detailed eye examination and biometric measurements are essential before deciding whether FLACS is appropriate.

What happens after surgery?

Modern cataract surgery is generally performed as a short, day-care procedure. Most patients experience improvement in vision relatively quickly, although complete visual recovery varies depending on the condition of the eye and the type of cataract.

Patients must follow postoperative instructions carefully, including prescribed eye drops and follow-up examinations. Conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration or corneal disease may influence the final visual outcome.

Choosing the right cataract surgery

The most important factor in successful cataract surgery is not simply the use of a particular technology. Experienced surgical judgment, accurate measurements, appropriate IOL selection and careful postoperative care are equally important.

If you have cataract or are experiencing blurred vision, glare, difficulty driving at night or increasing dependence on spectacles, a comprehensive examination can determine whether cataract surgery—and whether FLACS—is appropriate for you.
